WA event review: Basics of market research for market research buyers
About 40 people attended this function held at the famous Black Tom’s Bar and Grill in Subiaco on the evening of the 25 February. A variety of industries were represented, including local and state government, advertising agencies, shopping centres, universities and research agencies. Most were non-members. The function was designed to address basic research questions. Lindsay Leek, from NFO Donovan Research, spoke on the research brief, the research proposal and the differences between qualitative and quantitative research, illustrating points with her extensive experience in the Department of Health. Lindsay emphasised the importance of quality checks such as looking for evidence of QPMR, and IQCA accreditation. Shaun Griffin from Market Equity discussed quantitative methods in more depth in his presentation ‘Quantitative methods: Which do I choose?’ Following a break, Nicky Munro brought sampling to life through a practical discussion on ‘How big should my sample be, and how representative is my sample?’ Finally, Helen Close of Strategic Management Solutions suggested many points to consider when presenting and disseminating information through the organisation. Her talk brought some important issues to the fore; for example, making sure reports were available through an intranet, or monthly newsletter through the organisation to build a culture of research acceptance. The evening concluded with a social gathering around Black Tom’s mezzanine bar, when some great Australian wines and beers were enjoyed.
